At least one Cape Coral resident victim of ATM scam

By WINK News

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - You could have had money stolen from you, because of an ATM scam in Cape Coral.

"I think it's pretty scary that now we have to worry about using our ATM cards at an ATM machine," said ATM user, Mark Shamrock.

Worry, because according to Wachovia's Florida spokesperson, a thief placed a skimming device on one of their ATM machines. It happened at the Camelot Branch, along Cape Coral Parkway sometime around mid August.

"I think it's terrible. I just can't believe in this day and age that people are doing things like this and they're getting away with it," said ATM user, Maryann Hoffman.

A skimmer is usually put on the card slot or keyboard of the ATM to capture account information. Crooks can grab it through the magnetic strip or can pick up the pin number through the keyboard.

The Wachovia spokesperson says there has been at least one victim. A Cape Coral woman recently found out $2,400 was stolen from her account.

It's enough to make some people a bit uneasy.

"I don't like to use my ATM card for anything but the ATM machines, and now I'm kind of worried about using it for that," said Shamrock.

For others, they'll now be paying more attention.

"I just come in and get my money and quickly get out of here, but from now on I'm going to be a little more careful," said ATM user, Bob Kimmerly.

"That is something to be alert about," said Hoffman.

This is not the first time something like this has happened in our area. There have been several reports over the past few years.

If you've used this ATM recently and believe you may be a victim of this scam, you should contact your bank.

If this happens at a Bank ATM.. Does the bank take responsiblity or is the consumer out the money??

Why can't the consumer get a better view of this deviceand exactly where it would be located so we know what to look for, or a at least show the consumer in slow motion how this can happen. Somehow we need more protection.

Don't the ATM owners check them daily (or at least frequently) for tampering? Couldn't they discover the skimming device if checked frequently?

What do we look for? Can you actually tell that the ATM has been tampered with?
