3 arrested in stolen metal undercover investigation

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

NORTH FORT MYERS, Fla. - In April 2008, the Lee County Sheriff's Office initiated an undercover investigation into questionable business dealings at Tiger Muffler, a metal recycling facility in North Fort Myers. A dramatic increase in burglaries and metal thefts in the county prompted the investigation.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office says as part of the three-and-a-half month operation, undercover detectives sold various metals on multiple occasions despite the suspects having knowledge the items were stolen.

Among the items presented as stolen goods were copper wiring, tubing, street signs, and catalytic converters.

The Sheriff's Office says during the transactions, the suspects knowingly allowed the undercover agents to use false names.

Those arrested are store owner Scott Ross, his employee Betty Bowker, and customer Mark Cass.

Deputies say Cass knowingly bought stolen items from undercover agents and then sold them to Tiger Mufflers.

Late Thursday night WINK News spoke to Stephen Ross, Scott's son. He says the allegations aren't true and Tiger Mufflers always operates within accordance to the law.

Im glad to see that the police are finally realizing that guys like Scott Ross are behind alot of the stealing going on. He uses his stroke as a pity me. When in fact his stroke was caused by drug abuse. He is a guy that thought he would come to Ft Myers and get rich by being sneaky. He should be ran out of this town just like the other towns that ran him out! Scott has ran out of lies and excuses. The only friends Scott has left is crackheads. No one elese trust him. Good job Lee Co Sheriff!!!

I own a Junk Car Removal Service. I have sold Catalytic converters to Scott many times. At these times proper paperwork was always filed. An owner of a scrap metal Facility has no way of knowing every piece of copper or steel isn't stolen. That is why the customer signs an affidavit. If the Sheriffs Office invested allied on MLK I'm sure they would find the same thing. It is illegal to take aluminum cans from recycling bins. How can the owner know where the empty beer cans come from.
