Suspect runs from deputies, jumps into water, dies

By WINK News

BOCA GRANDE, Fla. - Saturday night Lee County Sheriff's Deputies on Boca Grande were chasing a man in a residential area. He ran north getting to the Lee County and Charlotte County boarder. At that point the man jumped into Inter Coastal waterway and went under water.

The Lee County Fire Department also helped in looking for the suspect. They were able to locate the subject underwater.

Because the body was found in Charlotte County, the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office is taking the lead in the investigation.

The man's body is being examined by the Medical Examiner's Office for determination of the cause of death.

The deceased man's name will not be released until confirmation of positive identification and the next of kin notified.

The incident started with what the Lee County Sheriff's Office calls "provoking deputies." Lee County Sheriff's deputies say the person that he tried three times to provoke deputies to chase after him.

These three encounters happened in Boca Grande and occurred just a few minutes apart. A deputy attempted to stop the vehicle but the vehicle took flight. They say because of the minor traffic violations and the erratic and reckless manner of the driver, the deputy did not pursue the vehicle.

The driver of the vehicle slowed and began to bait the deputy in an attempt to entice a vehicle chase.

The deputies located the vehicle a short time later in a residential area bordering Charlotte County.

It was parked and unoccupied, with the driver’s door open.

The deputies notified and requested assistance from the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office as they began a foot search for the driver.

Within a short period of time the man was located walking through dense mangroves in Charlotte County.

The man argued with deputies and ignored commands to get out of the water. Deputies say the man continued to walk through the mangroves into the water and swam out about thirty feet beyond the mangroves.

He went under water several times and one deputy entered the water in an attempt to locate and rescue the man. His body was later found floating near Boca Grande.
