UPDATE: Large stingray kills woman in Florida Keys

Large stingray kills Michigan woman in Florida Keys

By The Associated Press

MARATHON, Fla. (AP) - Officials say a Michigan woman died when a stingray jumped out of the water and struck her in the face in the Florida Keys.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified the woman as 57-year-old Judy Kay Zagorski of Pigeon, Michigan.

Officials say she was sitting in a boat when a spotted eagle ray flew out of the water. It weighed about 75 pounds and had a wingspan of five to six feet.

The woman's father was driving the boat on the Atlantic Ocean side of Vaca Key, where the city of Marathon is located.

Wildlife officials say the impact likely killed her. But it's not immediately clear if she had any puncture wounds from the ray's barb. An autopsy has been scheduled.

Spotted eagle rays are known to occasionally jump out of the water but are not aggressive. They are protected in Florida waters and are typically seen swimming on the water's surface.
