NAPLES, Fla. - A Collier County Sheriff Deputy spanked an 11-year-old boy and threatened him with a taser, according to an investigation.
The internal investigation reveals Collier County Sheriff Deputy Corporal Susan Boylan spanked the boy after he refused to listen to his mom.
"The child was having a counseling session and during the counseling session the child became aggressive and the child wasn't obeying his mother and the counselor at that time saw fit to call the Sheriff's Office for assistance," Michelle Batten, a spokesperson for the Sheriff's Office, said.
According to the report, when threatened, the boy responded, "You can't use that on me because I'm not being violent towards you and I'm a juvenile."
The officer discharged the taser twice, then placed the taser on the boy's shoulder without discharging it.
The deputy told investigators, "I don't think I did anything wrong."
The investigation said the officer had the mom's permission to spank the boy and she thought it was okay to intimidate with the taser.
"No, it's not the policy of the Sheriff's Office. The deputy did not act appropriately in this situation," Batten said.
The investigation found Boylan in violation of the Sheriff's Office taser policy and the use of force policy. Boylan also failed to report using the taser to a supervisor.
She was suspended for two days without pay and put on probation for six months, and will have to be retrained before she can carry a taser.

I wish more parents would call the police to their homes, when teenage unruly children, need to be firmly discipline by the office, maybe there would be a lot less crime, it the teenagers were made to feel their consequences more often.

Wow I agree a 11 year old is not too old to spank and in this case it was needed. The Taser is different. In my view it might be electric, but still classed as a gun.

The deputy is not being disciplined for spanking the boy. She is being punished for misusing the taser.

Isn't it amazing....A police officer has the authority to use deadly force if the situation arises, but s/he cannot spank an unruly kid, even with the mom's permission. Maybe the taser threat went a little too far, but spanking......come on!

Boo Hoo, a child got spanked. Boo hoo. Now of course the mother and the officer are some kind of criminal. What a great politically correct nightmare this country is becoming.

What's with the comments applauding the actions of the officer in this case? If you're going to be a right-wing law-and-order zombie then you have to admit that the officer in question violated more serious rules than did the kid. So you can't rail against the kid and not also be highly critical of the officer. What I'm saying is that you should at least try to have a position that makes sense and doesn't self-contradict.

On one hand...I agree. More people need to spank their kids WHEN APPROPRIATE! If the mother believes in that practice and gave the officer permission then I don't think the officer did anything wrong. I do think cops take their "authority" way too far however when they feel they can intimidate. But there is a stereotypical remark. More gov't officials should let it be know that there is nothing wrong with spanking if it is done the right way and for the right reasons.

"You can't use that on me because I'm not being violent towards you..." Apparently the 11-year old boy knows the taser policy better than that particular officer. Perhaps someone should investigate the Taser training. There's plenty of grotesque taser abuse going on all over North America and beyond and the officers involved with such abuse have all (supposedly?) been fully trained.
