Health officials: killer amoeba living in Collier County

By WINK News

Collier County - Collier County Health Officials issue a water warning after an amoeba kills three kids in Central Florida.

WINK News discovered low water levels in Southwest Florida mean more danger.

A spokesperson for the Collier County Health Department says the concern comes because drought is causing freshwater ponds and canals to have lower water levels. That means people swimming on top of the water will be closer to these dangerous amoebas that live on the bottom.

Getting an amoeba is rare, according the Center for Disease Control.

But health experts here warn you to use caution and wear nose plugs or swim in the gulf, because the amoebas don't live in salt water.
