Marco Island check scam

By Joe Capasso, WINK News

Marco Island - People across the country are getting large checks from the city of Marco Island in their mailboxes! The problem is, they're not real.

City Manager Bill Moss says his signature was even forged on the check.

Moss suspects just like other check scams, the victim would be asked to pay a processing fee.

Once the check is cashed the victim would never see the money.

Moss says he's received a number of calls, but he's not sure how many checks are out there.

"We would just hope people would know that the city of Marco Island is not going to have a Fortune 500 company with prize money," said Moss.

The city did not lose any money in this scam.

The Marco Island Police Department is investigating.
