CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Grace Community School Daycare in Cape Coral is being investigated for allegations of neglect according to a Department of Children and Families spokesperson.
On Friday, 3 toddlers, one of them only 2 years old, were able to walk out of the school and cross a busy street before nearby residents were able to round up the kids.
DCF spokesperson Erin Gillespie tells WINK News the school has faced allegations of abuse and neglect in the past.
WINK News has learned that in 1996, six families filed suit against the school on the same day - all alleging abuse.
Grace Community School Daycare answers to an accreditation body but operates under a Religious Exemption. The school is neither licensed or inspected by the State.
Gillespie says that while DCF will investigate the neglect allegations the agency's only recourse if the situation warranted, would be to refer the case to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
