Experimental plane crashes near Blind Pass

LEE COUNTY, Fla. - A pilot is being treated at Lee Memorial Hospital for his injuries after his experimental plane crashes off Captiva.

Sanibel Police Lieutenant Jamie Phillips says the department received a call at 1:35p.m. regarding a downed plane near Blind Pass, Captiva.

Upon their arrival they found a partially submerged plane.

The pilot reported that he was flying approximately 100 feet in the air at 70 mph while attempting a left turn.

At that point the plane's engine stalled.

According to Lieutenant Phillips a passing boater saved the pilot and brought him to shore.

EMS treated the man on the beach.

He was then transported by Med-flight to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Names of the pilot and the boater that saved him are not being released at this time.

Investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are on their way to the scene.
