BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - A Bonita family is both sad and angry over the death of their dog.
Their dogs disappeared over the weekend. And when they went to pick them up at Lee County animal services Monday they found out one had already been put to sleep..
Otis and Chip escaped from their backyard Friday when the case family was moving.
Andrea Case says she called animal services on Saturday looking for them.
"The answering service told me that they were not open only open for adoptions that day so I couldn't find out if the dogs were there."
Case checked animal service's website and found out they were at the shelter.
Lee County animal services picked the dogs up Friday... and gave the cases until Monday to get their dogs.
When the family showed up Monday afternoon to get their dogs... they got heartbreaking news.
Animal services euthanized Otis... because he didn't have a microchip.
Case says, "I asked him about the 3 day rule because if they're closed Sunday that shouldn't count."
Animal services tells wink news it followed their 3 calendar day rule, which includes the day the dog was picked up... Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Animal services says they didn't do anything wrong... they say they were just following policy... and says the family should have picked up their dogs as soon as possible.
