Man suspected of murdering his wife

By Nicole Oliverio

CHARLOTTE COUNTY - A death investigation leads authorities from Charlotte County all the way to Tallahassee where a man is now in custody.

The investigation began Wednesday, after a woman was found dead inside a Port Charlotte home.

That woman is 31-year old Yana Huss, of Russia.

It was a situation no one wanted to happen, but neighbors say, they knew it was coming.

"Almost from the time they've moved in, the police are down there all the time," said Louise Watson.

The Charlotte Sheriff's office says in the past several weeks, they have 20 documented cases of visiting the home at 2080 Rickover Street.

Yana Huss's husband, Scott Lee Huss, has a history of domestic abuse and, recently, continued to violate a restraining order.

His latest arrest happened less than two weeks ago.

"Our officers were telling us you could see this thing starting to escalate. You know, this guy has a temper, has a history, if you look at his criminal history," said Charlotte Sheriff John Davenport.

The history dates back to 2003. Huss has been arrested for beating and threatening to kill his Russian wife. Incident reports show he pulled a gun on her, threatened to feed her to alligators and she told deputies "she feared for her life."

"I kept thinking why doesn't she leave him, or what and then she finally did, but I guess it just didn't work," said Watson.

Scott Huss allegedly followed through on his threats.

According to an arrest warrant, Huss stabbed his wife in the chest. The report continues to say that Huss then took his step-son to Longwood, where Huss's mother lives. Huss dropped the step-son off on the front lawn. Deputies report the boy was covered in blood and was holding a will and paperwork that gave custody of the boy to relatives. The boy told deputies he witnessed his mother's murder.

Huss then fled to Tallahassee.

Wednesday night the Charlotte Sheriff's Office notified Tallahassee Police that he may be there. After a search of local motels, police found someone matching Huss’s description and made the arrest.

Meanwhile, back in the El Jobean neighborhood, neighbors watched as forensics teams collected evidence from the murder scene.

Neighbors say, they're not surprised this happened.

"I was just upset that something didn't get done before he did that to her," said Watson.

Davenport said the woman could have gone to C.A.R.E - a women's shelter - and "been protected and at least had some sanction there."

Instead, the only justice now for Yana Huss, is to keep her killer behind bars.
