Power outage doesn't dim long-planned Sanibel wedding

By Haley Hinds, WINK News

SANIBEL, Fla. - Around 10 Saturday night, much of Sanibel and Captiva went dark. Neighbors around Sanibel Captiva Road reported seeing bright explosions and sparks. while LCEC crews tried to pinpoint what caused the power lines to go down, firefighters battled several small brush fires. 5000 customers were without power... and so was a wedding reception just down the road at Sanctuary Golf Club. Bride and Groom Monieg and Jason Sill were dancing the all of a sudden, the DJ cut out, and so did the lights.

"The lights were coming on and Jason said, tell them to kill the lights, tell them to kill the lights, and I'm like, they're emergency lights, Jason," Monieg said.

So what did everybody do when the lights went out? They just lit some candles and kept the party going. "The good thing for us is that we had a band here, we had an Armenian band, so they played. We just kept going, we just kept going without sound equipment basically," Jason said.

The wedding they'd planned for a year ended 4 hours early, but hey, what's more romantic than a candlelight reception? "Everybody keeps saying we partied so hard the lights went out," Jason said.

Instead of pulling the plug, the newly married couple hopped in the limo and danced the night away someplace else...with electricity, of course.
