FORT MYERS, Fla. - With less than a week before Thanksgiving, organizations around Fort Myers are preparing to feed thousands who may not be able to put turkeys on their tables. But, it may not happen without a little more help.
For the last two days, the Nations Association handed out Thanksgiving dinners. Although they're short about 320 turkeys, Director Israel Suarez is depending on daily miracles to help feed 800 families, nearly double last year's 473 families. "I just live one day at a time," Suarez said. "I know I was real low and the Food Bank blessed us with 75 boxes of turkey. so I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow or Tuesday or Wednesday."
Last year at this point, his freezer was full of turkeys. Today, it's not even close. Suarez is determined not to let a drop in donations leave those 800 families with empty stomachs on Thanksgiving. Along with turkeys, he's asking for all the trimmings from sweet potatoes to green beans to pies.
The same goes for the Salvation Army. With Florida's latest unemployment numbers rising to 11.2%, and more than a million out of work, they're getting ready to serve well over the 600 meals they served last Thanksgiving. "Well, we can certainly use frozen turkeys not only for our Thanksgiving meal but also for our Christmas meal and for our Christmas food baskets that we give to families," said Megan Spears with the Salvation Army.
One turkey alone can feed 10 to 15 people. But even it's just a few cans, Spears says every little bit will help. Last week, the Harry Chapin Food Bank put out an emergency plea for turkeys. Today, they received a donation of 600 turkeys. But it and the other organizations we mentioned need all the help they can get. If you'd like to donate, you can contact them at:
