FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - The Coast Guard rescued two German scuba divers who were stranded off Sanibel Island after their boat drifted more than a mile away. The men were in the water for more than 4 hours as rescuers frantically searched for them.
The divers were first reported missing Thursday around 2:00 pm. Shortly before 6:00 pm, a Lee County Sheriff's Office airplane spotted the two men bobbing in the water. A Coast Guard boat rushed to the scene.
"We went right to them," said Edward Chalk of the Coast Guard. "We pulled up and they were very happy to see us."
The two men were clutching a dive buoy. The divers were not injured and were taken back to their boat.
"We get excited about saving people," said Coast Guard member Greyson Bailey. "So, it was a good day."
