Investigator regrets how murder case was handled

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

LEE COUNTY, Fla. - New bombshell details emerge in the double murder trial of Juan Mendez.

On Wednesday, the former lead investigator on the case took the stand.

Sgt Walter Ryan from the Lee County Sheriff's Office used to be the lead investigator in Whitney Mendez and Lori Stone's murder.

Juan Mendez, Whitney's estranged husband is on trial, accused of stabbing the two women to death

Wednesday in court, Sgt. Ryan testified he made some mistakes when investigating their murders.

He admitted there were leads he did not follow and evidence was not requested in time.

In particular, Whitney's phone records and surveillance video from the Denny's restaurant where she worked were never collected. until almost a year after the murders.

By that time they were gone.

The video from Denny's is important because the night before the murders, Juan Mendez allegedly went to the restaurant and threatened her.

The phone records could have helped the prosecution with their case because Brandy Ayers testified Tuesday that she was on the phone with Whitney when the murders unfolded.

Brandy said she heard a man yelling in the background.

Sgt. Ryan said he regrets what happened and wish he could go back and fix it.

Dr. Robert Pfalzgraf from the Medical Examiner's Office was also called back to the stand Wednesday.

He confirmed a piece of metal found in Lori Stone's head was from the knife believed to be the murder weapon.

Court resumes Thursday morning.
