ONLY ON WINK: 5th grader gets death threat on MySpace by classmate

By Christina Hernandez, WINK News

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A fifth grader had her life threatened on MySpace.

The girl's mother said the school isn't doing enough to protect her daughter.

WINK News is not naming the 11-year-old to protect her identity, but her mother tells us she is afraid to go to school after a girl threatened to kill her on the popular social networking site.

The posting asked friends to choose sides... and threatened to kill the girl. It said, "My side or (the girls name). My side ... We kill (the girl)." It's signed with a smiley face.

At first, the message written by a classmate, didn't scare the girl's mother.

"It's MySpace, it's kids, they're in 5th grade, it's not that serious."

Then she saw the threat posted on at least two more MySpace pages.

"When we pulled it up and I saw it, I said, okay, this is serious. She's actually wanting to harm my child."

Before the death threat, there were other postings by the same MySpace user. One uses profanity, the other reads: "Waiting for" (the girl) to beat the crap outta me. I'm not worried."

"I speak to all parents; I speak to all kids. Parents talk to your children because you do not know."

According to MySpace, you must be at least 13 years old to have a profile. If you are under 18, you are not allowed to list your age as over 18. All of the students involved are 11-years-old.

"I couldn't believe my daughter would be on there saying that she's 18."

The schools principal would not go on camera, but said she will investigate. The situation is more complex than usual because it happened off school grounds, but it's a problem this mother said has to be addressed.

"This has escalated over MySpace. The kids attend the same school as my daughter, and now she's afraid that she might get hurt."

The girls mother didn't even know about the MySpace page until her daughters friend showed her the threats. She said the account will be deleted immediately.
