Pedestrian killed when struck by sheriff's vehicle

By Haley Hinds

Around 7:25 Saturday evening, police say a volunteer driving a Charlotte County Sheriff's vehicle struck and killed a pedestrian on Rt. 41 in Port Charlotte.

The victim is a woman believed to be in her 50s or 60s. The posted speed limit on that stretch of road is 45 mph. The driver, who is in his 20s, told investigators he was driving much slower.

At this point, investigators are calling this an accident. They are not releasing the name of the driver or the victim until they've notified the family.
