Charlotte Deputies respond to domestic dispute, shoot armed suspect

By Max Turnier

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Charlotte County Sheriff's Deputies open fire on a man they say would not drop his guns.

Deputies say they got a 911 call at 1:13am Saturday about a man threatening his spouse with a gun inside his home at 3490 Cohoes Street in Port Charlotte.

When Deputies arrived at the home, 63-year-old George Lafferty came out the front door with a shotgun in one hand and a revolver in another, according to reports.

Deputies say Lafferty ignored orders to drop his weapon and began to take aim. Two Deputies fired multiple shots, striking Lafferty and his house. They are on paid administrative leave.

Lafferty was taken to the Lee Memorial Hospital trauma unit. His condition is unknown at this time.

"When he makes the first aggressive move that that deputy feels his life or someone else's life is in danger, that's when he's authorized to use deadly force," said Lt. Rickey Hobbs about his responding Deputies.
