COLLIER COUNTY- Collier County admits they may have thousands of pages of your personal information online for anyone to see.
More than 9 million documents are filed at the Collier Clerk of Courts Office and WINK News discovered software may be to blame for thousands of those documents not having your personal information blacked out.
Liz Kemmer searched the Internet for a long lost friend.
To her surprise, a search on the Collier Clerk of Courts public records database gave her more than her friend's forwarding address.
Kemmer says,"What I noticed right next to it was her social security number and her ex-husband's social security number."
These weren't the only social security numbers posted, a co-worker discovered the same thing.
"She hopped on the Internet and low and behold there was her social security number and her husbands."
Terri Hart with the Clerk of Courts says there are 5 different departments looking at a document before it hits the Internet.
"But still there's one every once in a while that's missed."
The problem could be the software used to cover personal information when all documents were transferred to the web in 2003.
Hart says the margin of error is 1-2%, but that equals up to 90 thousand documents online with personal information waiting to be stolen.
"The best we can do is as soon as it's brought to our attention is have it redacted immediately."
In this case, the clerk of courts immediately covered up the social security numbers and will do so as they are made award of problems.
