FORT MYERS, Fla. - Publix is one of the best companies to work for in the country. That's according to Fortune Magazine.
Publix Super Markets ranks number 88 on Fortune Magazine's 100 Best Companies to Work for in 2009. The main reason is because they have never had layoffs... ever. That's something huge for employees looking for job security in a tough market.
"It's really cool because at a time when many other companies are shrinking, merging, or folding, Publix continues to open new stores," spokesperson Shannon Patton said.
The list started 12 years ago and Publix has been on it every time.
There are 33 stores in Lee County with 3,775 employees and 19 stores in Collier County with 2,082 employees.
"I'm actually kind of a Publix snob," customer Corey Flowers said. "Given the choice, I'll drive a little further for Publix than to go anywhere else."
"They're always real courteous and everything," customer Gary Stimpson said.
As unemployment continues to grow, the grocery chain has soared. It's opened 49 stores and hired more than 1,200 people the past year.
"Even before the recent economic downturn, we were a lean company, closely monitoring our expenses and operating debt free," Patton said.
Publix is also recognized for great benefits and promoting employees. In fact, the current president started out as a bagger.
