The I.R.S. may owe you money

By Haley Hinds

The I.R.S. has more than $15 million in refund checks just waiting to be returned to people in Florida. Why? Because they never made it to taxpayers' mailboxes.

There are plenty of reasons why tax returns don't always reach their destinations. people get married, divorced, or they move and forget to notify the I.R.S. or U.S. Postal Service.

According to the I.R.S., there are 50 undelivered refunds in Charlotte County, more than 200 in Collier, and nearly 350 in Lee County, adding up to almost 600 checks and $877,183 waiting to be returned.

We tried tracking people down who are on the list, but just like the I.R.S., we couldn't find them. That is, until we came upon Nikoma Edison. The I.R.S. has a check with her name on it, and the mother of 3 says, it couldn't come at a better time.

"I actually called the I.R.S. and they told me they didn't know," Edison said. "They sent it out and I never contacted them back again. I'm excited, I'm glad. It's actually a blessing to me and my kids."

To see if your name is on the list, just head to IRS.gov.
