The Fort Myers Police Department is investigating itself. It all has to do with who was being considered for a job and why.
A 38-page report was released today and inside it are e-mails, interviews and statements alleging two members of the department were playing favorites when it came to hiring.
Back in june, Chief Doug Baker was looking to fill 2 clerk positions within the department. One candidate was hired, but when he checked the files to see why there hadn't been a second hire, he found this. "A note from the record supervisor, basically stating that the person was not qualified for the position but the Deputy Chief wanted to continue to move it through the process," Baker explained. "That was a flag to me right there that we had a problem."
Baker soon learned favoritism may have played a role in who was being considered. As a result, he demoted Glenn Johnson from Deputy Chief to Captain, while Captain Melvin Perry was reprimanded and placed on probation until June. The two allegedly urged that friends' children be considered over more qualified applicants. Baker says these so-called "courtesy interviews" had become a common thing, but won't be anymore.
"I want referrals from internal, but I want those candidates that we're making referrals for to be qualified for the position," Baker said.
Johnson denies he and Perry ever played favorites and has since filed a grievance against the department.
Chief Baker says he will now get memos on all referrals - who is being hired, and who referred them - so he can ensure anyone being considered meets all of the qualifications.
