Members of Celebration Church have reason ... to celebrate

By WINK News

NAPLES - Members of the Celebration Church certainly have reason to cheer.

In a 6 to 1 vote, City council members extended the Celebration Church's lease to worship at Cambier park for another five years.

"I think it's a wonderful thing," says church member Wayne Battaglino. "It's what the public wants."

"Whether its through the church, businesses, the park, whatever brings people here we want to give the impression of being a friendly town," says City Councilman Gary Price.

The controversy began after a nation-wide group called the Freedom From Religion Foundation wrote a letter to the city. In the letter, the foundation said it didn't want the church's lease to be renewed because it would "demonstrate the city's preference for religion."

"Interestingly enough the very people who started this controversy didn't show up," says Harry Mihet with Liberty Counsel.

But, hundreds of church members did and today's vote guarantees that weekly celebration.

"It's so wonderful where we can come and do this and everything works out," says Battaglino.

WINK's calls to a local Freedom From Religion Foundation member went unreturned.
