Auto Advantage closes retail sales

By Christina Hernandez, WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - One of the largest used car dealerships in Fort Myers has closed its doors.

The business will no longer sell retail. Instead, they are shifting toward wholesale and will work with dealers more.

Auto Advantage shut down Tuesday - without any notice.

The lot was full. Cars had signs and prices on them, but none of them can be sold... at least for right now.

The parking lot is full of cars for sale at Auto Advantage on Colonial and Ortiz, and employees are still working in the garage, but the used car dealership is closed.

"It's terrible that happens like this," Mike Manos said.

WINK News has learned the business was having problems making ends meet.

"I was in the auto business for 25 years and I had to change my career," Dave Mulder said.

"Why?"

"Because of that. Same thing. My owner had five stores and had to shut them all down," Mulder answered.

The general manager didn't want to go on camera, but said it's an emotional day because a lot of people are being put out on the street.

"It's sad," Manos said. "I feel terrible for the people who have lost their jobs. It's awful."

It's another blow to a dealership and its employees - now shut down and out of work in the hard hitting economy.

"I feel for them entirely, especially ones who have families and kids that they're trying to support," mother Sheila Crane said. "I already know how hard it is."

The vehicles will make their way out of the lot over the next couple weeks and different ones will be brought in.

There is no word yet on how previous customers who have warranties will be affected.
