Most parents wouldn't normally let their kids run door to door or take candy from strangers. Those rules tend to loosen on Halloween. But if you're a registered sex offender, the rules get even stricter.
"There's no excuse. If we find anyone in violation, they will go to jail tonight," said Officer Chris Mainous of the Fort Myers Police as he patrolled city neighborhoods.
Officers like Mainous were out on the streets checking up on a few of the 221 registered local sex offenders, specifically those ordered to steer clear of children. "They're not allowed to have any kind of decorations in their yard after dark, they're not allowed to have any lights on, if children come up to the door or if anyone comes to the door, they're not supposed to answer the door. At 10 p.m., they have a curfew, they have to be in," Mainous explained.
As he drove house to house, just as the court ordered, there were no lights, no decorations. While officers didn't actually catch anyone in violation, it's reassuring for parents that at least for tonight, everyone was playing by the rules. "You gotta be careful out there," said Valeria Sanchez.
The police were back out later that night checking to make sure those same people were in for the night. If you're curious to see just who's living in your neighborhood, go to: http://offender.fdle.state.fl.us/offender/homepage.do
