Lead...chromium... not the types of things you'd want to be smearing all over your face. But, if you're using face paint as a part of your Halloween costume, there's a good chance you are, according to a new study.
"That's pretty scary," Patrick St. Hilaire said as he was looking for face paint at Masquerade in North Fort Myers.
That's also the stance of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics. In its report titled "Pretty Scary," it tested some of the more popular face paints used for Halloween, in theatres and face-painting booths. 10 out of 10 contained lead. 6 out of 10 contained nickel, cobalt, or chromium, at levels much higher than recommended. But you'll never see those ingredients listed on the labels. The FDA doesn't require it.
Dermatologist Dr. Debra Fett Desmond says, parents beware. "Children, if exposed to lead early on, can developmentally, have problems later on and with hyperactivity, neurological things like that," Fett Desmond said.
According to the study, lead can also increase the risk for miscarriage and lower sperm counts. Still, face paint is one of the top sellers at Masquerade. Owner Rodney Baier says he makes sure the paint he sells is lead-free. "At Halloween, it's probably going to be in the range of $10-11,000 of the makeup we sell a year at Halloween alone," Baier said.
