COLLIER COUNTY - The Chicago Cubs may be coming to Collier. A Naples-based financial group is putting together a proposal to attract the major league team.
Workers and customers at the Taste of Chicago Eatery on Airport Road are excited The Cubs are looking at Collier as their next spring training location.
"I hope it's true," says Rick Berec, owner of Taste of Chicago.
'5th Avenue Advisors is heading up the bid for the cubs, who sent representatives to Naples earlier this month.
"The Ceo and owners were here and they were very impressed by Southwest Florida," says Gary Price, owner of 5th Avenue Advisors.
The Cubs need 120 acres for a 15-thousand seat stadium and six practice fields. That could cost around $80 million. But, the stadium won't be built in the city of Naples because there isn't enough available land. That leaves the rest of Collier County as a potential site.
"The Cubs would bring new business there's no doubt about it," says Collier County Commissioner Jim Coletta. "My only concern is the price."
But, Price says the money would come from private funds and tourism dollars, not local taxpayers. The Cubs bring in about $30 million to their current home in Mesa, Arizona. They've been there 40 years and some wonder if they're just using Collier as a bargaining chip.
"I don't believe any of this is designed to be a ploy," says Price. "It's a real offer."
An offer fans can't refuse.
"We want the Cubbies down here that's for sure no doubt about it," Berec.
5th Avenue Advisors is looking for public input. They've asked the Tourism Development Council to help put together a panel that will help with the process.
