Only WINK News cameras were rolling as rescue crews rush to pull victims from the wreckage of a helicopter crash. The chopper went down in a remote section of Southwest Florida near the Babcock Ranch at the Lee, Charlotte and Glades county lines.
It took three hours for rescue crews to find the downed helicopter because they kept getting conflicting information. The pilot suffered a broken leg and was life-flighted to Lee Memorial Hospital. Three other passengers suffered minor injuries and were reported to have driven themselves to the hospital.
Authorities on scene tell WINK News the chopper lost power and started spinning before crashing into the field. A witness called 911 around 6:30 p.m. to report it.
The pilot first called a friend, then 911.
The helicopter is a Robinson R-44. It's registered to J&J Investments out of Naples.
Federal investigators will be on scene to find out the cause of the crash.
