FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Lee County Mosquito Control District is increasing services in Iona amid a recent case of west Nile virus.
"In addition to extra surveillance for the virus, we're doing the extra spray work, we've got trucks in the area, we've got aircraft in the area," said Shelly Redovan with Lee County Mosquito Control.
More frequent blood tests from chickens placed around the county for the purpose of tracking mosquito borne illnesses show promising signs that a spread of West Nile is unlikely.
"Right now we're feeling comfortable that there won't be a large spread problem because we are not seeing it in the mosquitoes, we are not seeing it in the chickens," said Redovan.
Lee County Health Officials confirmed that a 69-year-old man was infected with West Nile last week. He is still in the hospital but in stable condition, according to family members.
