Lee Sheriff's Office First in the world to get new crime fighting tool

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

Lee County - The Lee Sheriff's Office is the first in the entire world to get their hands on the taser gun of the future.

It's called the Taser X 3.

Right now Lee County Sheriff's Office uses taser guns that shoot one round.

The X 3 shoots three rounds, tripling their chances of catching the bad guy.

"these are fantastic," Sheriff Mike Scott said.

Founder Tom Smith explains how they work.

"It's a multi shot system. It has the ability to shoot at 3 different targets or if the officers misses it has back up to increase the success rate in the field," he said.

Case in point, when Smith showed us how to use the gun Thursday afternoon the second round never fired.

But in a real world scenario it wouldn't be an issue.

"This cartridge didn't go. It automatically went to the next one," Smith said.

The Lee Sheriff's office purchased 5 of the Taser X 3's.

They cost about $16 hundred dollars a piece.

This is double the cost of the current taser guns, but for those fighting crime it's worth the price.

"From an officers safety perspective they are not having to unload and reload during a conflict," Smith said.

The Taser X 3's will be used only on a case by case basis.

As of right now there's no plans to buy more.

Smith says other law enforcement agencies in the country plan on using the new taser guns too.
