New Chinese drywall developments won't help some victims in SWFL

By Christina Hernandez, WINK News

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA - More people living in homes built with Chinese drywall are speaking only to WINK News. They say it's ruining their life and new developments this week aren't helping their problem.

Thursday, a conference was held to consolidate all Chinese drywall lawsuits - taking them straight to the manufacturer in China, and distributor in Germany. Friday, the IRS sent Senator Bill Nelson a letter stating drywall damage may be considered a loss that the owner can deduct from their taxes.

The news has both people WINK News with not feeling any better about their living in their homes.

Tami Kirchedorfer is packing away her things and moving out of her North Fort Myers home.

"We're going to go stay with a friend for a couple days and hopefully we get our house, and then after that we don't know," Kirchedorfer said.

Her home was built with Chinese drywall, and it's not only tarnishing her belongings, but her health. She had surgery less than a month ago, and said the defective drywall is hurting her recovery.

"From the laundry room to the bedroom, I have to stop and sit down, and I can't breathe because I've been in the house for so long."

Jim O'keefe has the same problem with his home in Englewood. In two years, he's had to replace his air conditioning unit three times. The chrome on his Harley's are turning green, and he said the home he spent thousands on is worth nothing now.

"I bought the house because this is what I wanted. It's every body's dream to have their house and I have it and it's a disaster," O'keefe said.

Both O'keefe and Kirchedorfer said the government and lawsuits won't solve their problems.

"There's no price on your health," Kirchedofer said. "There is no price."

O'keefe wants his home builder to buy his house back from him, and Kirchedorfer also wants the money she's put into her home back.

Right now, both said getting any kind of answer or solution is a waiting game.
