FORT MYERS BEACH -- The officers and staff of the Fort Myers Beach Coast Guard station have two big reasons to be proud. The Coast Guard recognized the local unit with two awards of excellence.
Today the Coast Guard 7th District Chief of Staff Scott Buschman handed over the Sumner I. Kimball Readiness Award. Its the second time in a row the Fort Myers Beach station has received the award recognizing high standards of boat and crew readiness. Less than ten percent of all Coast Guard stations receive the Sumner Kimball Award.
The second honor recognizes the station's ongoing effort in the battle against human smuggling in Southwest Florida. The CG-210 Unit Intelligence Award cites "superior intelligence support provided to the law enforcement and the United States' intelligence communities during 2008."
The Fort Myers Beach Coast Guard station teamed with more than 30 local agencies and trained more than 3,000 law enforcement personnel to enhance intelligence programs.
