Lee County - On Wednesday, more than 100-new Florida laws are now in effect.
One of the laws was inspired by a Cape Coral boy.
It's titled: The Zahid Jones, Junior bill..
The new law gives grandparents more power to help their loved ones.
3 year old Zahid Jones, Junior was beaten to death by his mother's boyfriend.
Prior to his death, Zahid's grandmother, Janice Jones spoke up and said he was in danger, but says no one listened.
With this new law she hopes something like this will never happen again.
"I feel if this bill doesn't do anything but save one child, I would feel I made a difference and my grandson had a purpose for his life. His life made a difference. Janice Jones told WINK News.
Since her grandson Zahid died three years ago she has been an advocate for grandparents rights.
In the days prior his death she says she told DCF investigators he needed help but says no one listened.
"It's such a hopeless, helpless feeling," she said.
Following Zahid's death, she had enough.
"When I realized there wasn't a bill that grandparents didn't have rights, I was determined to go the long haul to make this happen," she said.
She got Representative Nick Thompson on her side.
He co-sponsored the bill.
The law gives grandparents the right to speak in court and have input in what happens to their grandchildren in the foster system.
It also requires DCF to notify grandparents or relatives of upcoming hearings related to the child's care.
"I've been bombarded by grandparents who say they now have hope," Jones said.
