Cape Coral man wrestles an intruder

By Cristin Severance

A Cape Coral man says his home is broken into in broad daylight while he's inside!
The man told us he wrestled the suspect before the guy got away.
Now the alleged home invasion victim and his family may have to find a new place to live after the landlord threatens to evict them.

Cape Coral, FLA -
"It's a natural instinct of mine to defend my house and my son," said Jim Mercado.

Mercado says those instincts kicked in Monday when he and his 11-year-old heard someone trying to get in.

"Monday afternoon, it's raining, you'd never think coming around that corner and there's this stranger in your kitchen--in your face," said Mercado.

He says the man claimed to be the landlord's nephew before Mercado pushed him outside and they started wrestling.

"He starts to try and fight me so that didn't work out too good for him," said Mercado.

He says the intruder handed over one phone but broke free and sped off in a white car.
The suspect got away with another phone and six hundred dollars--that's when Mercado called 9-1-1.

"Forensics's got his D.N.A. off my arm," said Mercado.

While police look for the alleged suspect Mercado and his family may have to look for a new home.
Their landlord showed up during our interview, claiming the Mercado's moved in three weeks ago--and haven't paid.

"I was very silly to let them move in and trust them..they haven't paid a cent," said landlord Kathy Gilmore.

She wants them out and says the robbery story doesn't add up.

"I think this is a very safe neighborhood. My neighbor was outside during that time period and said they saw no car," she said.

Mercado is standing by his story.
The police report shows officers found a hat and a screwdriver outside the home.
Mercado describes the suspect as a white man, tall and skinny, with a thin beard.
The landlord says she still wants the family out in three days.
