Stingray surprise!

Stingray surprises film crew when it jumps onto their boat

By Christina Hernandez, WINK News

FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - The crew of a TV show got quite the surprise on Fort Myers Beach Friday.

The show is called 'How to do Florida' and Friday afternoon the crew was filming an episode about fishing for Snook, but they caught something else they weren't prepared for.

The crew wasn't ready for a stingray and they sure didn't want it on their boat either, but the feisty thing jumped aboard while cameras were rolling.

"So, this is not what we we're after today?" Chad Crawford, the host of the TV show asked the Captain.
"This is definitely not the targeted species," the Captain answered.

The crew was halfway done filming when an unexpected guest jumped in.

Crawford said, "All of a sudden, this huge eagle ray - he must have been 50, 60 pounds - comes flying over, comes right at us."

Crawford said he was ready to jump in the water to get away from the giant stingray.

"Me and the Captain were both shaking," Crawford said. "Me and him were both on the back of the boat at that time screaming like girls."

They were scared because they didn't know where their new visitor was going to flop next.

"Has this ever happened to you?" Crawford asked the Captain.
"Oh no." The Captain answered. "I've been fishing here my whole life and I've never seen anything like this. I've never been quite this close to one. I don't exactly know what we're going to do."

Minutes after the video was taken, the Captain grabbed the ray and threw it over board. Then, it swam away.

"I mean this will never happen again. This is lightening strike odds that that ray jumped and the boat happened to be right there," Crawford said. "It was a very, very scary experience."

The Captain said, "It's a one in a million shot for that to happen."
