LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Sitting in a courtroom Gail Rabon hears about the final moments of her son's life.
In August 2007, 20-year-old Gerry Rabon was killed during a robbery at a convenience store.
Monday afternoon one of the robbers, Iris Moreland admitted her role in the crime. She stood in front of the judge, her family, and the victim's family and plead guilty to second degree murder. As part of a plea deal, she avoids a trial and life in prison.
After pleading guilty, Moreland told the judge what happened the night Rabon was shot. She told the judge how she and her brother, Chad, wearing masks and armed with guns, went into the San Carlos Park convenient store where she worked and demanding money. But the clerk, 20 year-old Gerry Rabon refused. Moreland said at that point, Rabon and her brother started fighting and the gun went off. Rabon was shot in the head. He died five days later. His mother Gail was also in the courtroom.
"I came to hear it with my own ears. This is not something I would wish on anyone," Gail told WINK News about why she wanted to come to the hearing.
She says her son's murder has destroyed her family. "I have a son who misses his brother to no end. I, myself, and Jack will have a life sentence because we will never be over this. A victim is never over a loved one being murdered. This is a horrible thing."
In court, Moreland said the shooting was an accident.
Her attorney says she's remorseful.
"She has expressed her condolences to the family. She was going to do it today, but didn't have the opportunity," David Brener, Moreland's attorney said.
But no matter how sorry she says she is, Gail Rabon says it doesn't change the fact her son is dead.
"He was my son. Now he's gone," she said breaking down in tears.
As part of her plea deal, Iris could get up to 40 years in prison. She may have to testify against her brother, Chad. He faces first degree murder charges and possibly the death penalty
