Fighting symptoms of Multiple Sclerosis

By Jennifer Stacy, WINK News

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Multiple Sclerosis affects thousands of people in our area, and people are diagnosed every hour of every day. MS can strike any family, and it's victims can be as young as two years old. There is local help available that is making a big difference, offered at the Cape Coral Wellness Center.

Multiple Sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease that usually strikes people between 20 and 50 years old. It attacks the central nervous system, affecting mobility, vision, and balance, making even simple tasks difficult. There is no cure.

The MS water program at the Wellness Center incorporates specialized exercises to push sufferers to over come their disability.

"Every week I just feel better." Explains Martha Hannigan, who was diagnosed with MS in 1989 and has improved since beginning the water class. "Looking at other people and seeing what they're able to do, it's just amazing to see them not using the walker, when they started using the walker, or being able to do other exercises, and the confidence."

Free programs in our community are made possible through donations to the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

If you would like to help, two walks are being held this Saturday, February 21st in Lee and Collier counties.

Locations:
Lee County: Lakes Park
Naples: Lowdermilk Park

Check in is at 7:30, and the walks begin at 9:00.

For more information call 1-800-FIGHT MS.

WINK News is proud to sponsor the walks this year.
