Flipping foreclosed homes benefits locally

By Christina Hernandez, WINK News

CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - A Charlotte County man turns a dream into reality after he losses his job in construction. He's flipping houses, but not selling them to just anyone.

Gary Grennell is not just helping local people - he's helping the local economy as well. Everything from start to finish happens in Charlotte County.

Morton's ACE Hardware is a frequent stop for Grennell. He's been working in the construction business for 30 years, but says it's never been as fulfilling as it is now. For the past year, he's been flipping foreclosed homes - trying to make those struggling, become homeowners again.

Grennell said, "The market right now is people who lost their homes. How are they going to get back into home ownership? So, we found kind of a niche in the market that would work for everybody and everybody would benefit."

Grennell said he doesn't just keep the home prices low. He also puts an average of 30,000 dollars into each house. All that hard work and money stays in Charlotte County.

Morton's ACE Hardware owner Joe Waksler said Grennell has been coming in his store for 15 years. "None of the money goes to corporate out of state. None of the money goes out of this area, so having local people buy it from us keeps everything circulating within the area, within the town," Waksler said.
