LEE COUNTY, Fla. - Scammers are banking on what many credit card holders are asking, how to cut down those monthly payments with lower interest rates.
The Lee County Sheriff's Office says it all starts with a phone call from a "credit card company" telling you they can give you a lower interest rate, six percent is a number that's frequently being used.
While it may sound like an enticing deal to some people, it's nothing more than attempt to get you to give up your information for their own use.
Stacey Payne, Community Relations Manager with LCSO says this scam is spreading across Southwest Florida.
She says if you want a lower rate, take the initiative.
"If your credit score is going to allow them to lower your interest rate, they want to keep you as a customer...call," said Payne, "Call your credit card company yourself, flip over your card, look at your billing statement. Make that phone call yourself."
If you think you've received a similar call or if you want to verify whether a claim is legit, you can call the Lee County Sheriff's Office Fraud Line at 239-477-1242.
