Cape Coral man on 'Who Wants to Be a Millionaire'

By Maggie Crane, WINK News

Who wants to be a millionaire? A Cape Coral man, for one. Starting Monday night, he has his chance on the hit TV show of the same name.

"Are you ready to play?" It's the unmistakable voice of Meredith Viera. The "money lady," as Darrel Fasano calls her. He could use a little extra cash. The Cape Coral construction company owner has fallen on hard times since the market bottomed out.

"Struggling -- I've been struggling to pay bills since then," Fasano says.

Pay off will now come a little easier. Darrel's trivial knowledge landed him on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire."

"At first it's intimidating -- the sounds, the cameras, the music they play," Fasano says.

The Cape Coral man surrounded himself with family and friends to celebrate his t.v. debut -- the very people who helped land him in the hot seat.

"I did trivial questions with him every night," Jennifer Fasano, Darrel's daughter, says.

"If we had a day off, we brought notes to the beach," Darrel Fasano says. "I studied even when we went to happy hour! I brought Trival Pursuit cards."

"I do know all the capitals of Latin America now," Eileen Fasano, Darrel's wife, says of her new-found knowledge.

Jennifer adds that she did "pretty good, for once!" on her history test after helping her dad study.

What Darrel will do with the money, he hasn't decided. We can't spill the beans about how well he did, or Darrel doesn't get paid.

"They don't compensate you until you've been on the show," he says. "I signed a lot of contracts!"

He's been waiting a long time for this night.

"This all started in April when I initially applied," Fasano says.

The show was supposed to air in July, but time ran out before the show could finish taping. He flew to New York on his own dime to be on the show twice.

You'll have to tune in Tuesday to catch the end of Darrel's stint in the hot seat. It airs on CW6 at 5:30 p.m.
