CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Parents stealing with their children in tow. It's happened twice in Cape Coral over the past week and police are hoping this disturbing crime is not becoming a trend.
John McCray is in jail charged with stealing while his toddler looked on. Police say he took hundreds of dollars worth of video games from a Cape Coral Walmart using a razor to cut them out of their packages. When officers approached him he tried to run away carrying the games and his child. Police say he put up a fight but was caught.
"This obviously won't be tolerated," says Officer Gerald Moll of the Cape Coral Police Department.
WINK News tried to find out what he was thinking but his home was empty.
McCray's landlord said family members called her for help. "She called and asked us to bail him out and... we said no," she says.
McCray is facing child neglect, retail theft, resisting a merchant, and simple battery.
Cape Coral police are also investigating a shoplifting incident on Pine Island Road. Officer Moll says this time the parent shoved video games in his child's clothing. He says the police department will be working with the State Attorney's Office and Department of Children and Families on any case where someone brings a child to commit a crime.
