Collier camping ordinance targets homeless

By Tami Osborne, WINK News

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. - With shelters over-flowing, hundreds of homeless people in Collier County are left with nowhere to turn but the woods. Now, some people want to make it illegal for them to camp there.

"You basically try to hide out as best as you can, where you're not noticed," homeless man Chris tells us of his living conditions.

He says most finds spots off in the woods, but some people tell us homeless people are setting up camp too close to their homes.

"They shouldn't be sleeping around here outside because its disturbing the people who live around here," an East Naples resident says.

Now, the Collier County Commission is looking at an ordinance that would ban camping outside of a campground.

If passed, the law would allow the Sheriff's office to pick up homeless people and take them to a local shelter, but if the shelters don't have any open beds, nothing can be done.

These days with waiting lists to get into shelters like St. Matthews House, if adopted, the law will do nothing to get people out of the woods.

"Its home," Chris says.

But these homeless men we talked to say it could be a better home.
"Have like a campground area, where its monitored by the police," one homeless man tells us.

"A tent city, yeah, that'd be great!" another agrees.

We're told the idea of a monitored campground for the homeless has been tossed around, but those interested say it needs to be a broad community effort.
