FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. - Ann and Rodney Rosewell thought their brand new lap computer was a Black Friday steal, but when they got home they found something they were not bargaining for... child porn. While her husband read the directions, Ann tried to figure out the computer for herself.
"My husband says I'm always like this. I don't read the manual, I just start clicking," said Ann Rosewell.
Since they don't have an internet service, she told us she wanted to see if the computer would connect to an unsecured wireless network. It did.
"Sure enough, there's a whole full screen of files that are foreign to what should be on the computer with some interesting names on them," said Rodney.
The file names are too graphic for us to explain, but we can tell you they were describing several images of child pornography.
Even more disturbing, the images were mixed in with someones normal family photos.
The couple reported it right away to Lee County sheriff's deputies.
"He was able to very quickly go backwards and find out where it was coming from, which shocked us," Rodney explained.
Deputy Wailko, who says he has 13 years of personal computer experience and training, told the couple the pictures were actually coming from a file on the unsecured network their computer tapped into.
The photos were available for anyone on the network to see.
"Disgusted," said Ann as she explained how she felt, "I wish I could wipe it out of my computer that's in my head."
The sheriff's office says an arrest has not been made, but a suspect has been identified using a name that appeared in the folder.
A report on the incident says that person lives at an address in the couple's Indian Creek RV Park.
But, computer experts tell us this can be tricky because the folder was found on an unsecured network. They say It's either a great defense or the person really did not know the photos were there.
Experts tell us they've seen people take advantage of unsecured wireless connections by downloading images using someone else's signal. This is why they recommend you make sure your wireless network is pass-code protected.
