Teen suffers life-threatening injuries in “hood surfing” accident

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - According to the Cape Coral Police Department, a 16-year-old male suffered life-threatening injuries Wednesday afternoon while attempting to “hood surf” on a vehicle being driven in the 200 block of NE 21st Terrace. The accident occurred at 4:14 p.m.

The male, along with another 17-year-old male passenger, had hopped into the trunk of a 1998 Toyota Camry. The driver backed the vehicle out of the driveway and began driving the vehicle forward. The driver said that he looked to the rear of his vehicle and saw the 17-year-old get off the car. He indicated that the 16-year-old began moving and appeared to be exiting the vehicle as well.

Believing both passengers were no longer on the vehicle, the driver drove south on NE 2nd Avenue and made a left turn on NE 21st Terrace. He then heard the 17-year-old screaming and immediately stopped the car. The driver looked back to find the 16-year-old lying in the middle of the roadway on NE 21st Terrace. The juvenile was not moving.

The 16-year-old suffered life-threatening head injuries and was trauma-alerted by ambulance to Lee Memorial Hospital. Cape Coral traffic homicide investigators were called to the scene. There were no signs of impairment involved in this crash, and no charges are pending at this time.
