$60 grand ripped off from church

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

Port Charlotte - Edgewater United Methodist Church in Port Charlotte thought they went through a lot with Hurricane Charley. However, a new construction project is bringing on a whole new storm.

The church says the contractor they hired to do some construction work, including work on Hurricane Charley damage, took $60 thousand dollars of the money and paid his own bills with it.

The Port Charlotte based contractor was initially supposed to use that money to pay the sub-contractors he hired, but according to the church, he never did.

Now, those sub-contractors want to be paid and the church has a $70 thousand dollar lien against it.

Despite the setback, the church has been able to finish nearly all of the construction project.

Because no formal criminal charges have been filed, we can't name the construction company. We did tried contacting the contractor though, but all his phone numbers have been disconnected.
