Tips to avoid television tragedy in your home

By Tami Osborne, WINK News

GOLDEN GATE, Fla. - A television falls and kills a one-year-old child in Golden Gate Wednesday. According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, a child was climbing up a 4-foot TV stand when it and the 36-inch television on top, came toppling down on 16-month old Julian Sanchez. The injuries killed him.

Neighbors say they're shocked.

"I can't believe it - that somebody would have to go through that," David Zometsky says.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says tens of thousands of people are injured in TV tip-over accidents each year. Dozens are killed, mostly children.

According to the Commission, these accidents are on the rise because these days, people are not only buying larger television sets, they're also buying flat screens, which aren't as sturdy as traditional televisions, but experts say these accidents can be easily avoided. Here's how:
First of all, if your manufacturer makes a television stand specifically for your new set, buy that stand, and all the parts that go with it. If they don't, make sure you choose a stand that's wide enough and long enough for your television. Also, make sure your stand is sturdy before you set a TV on top of it.

Many new TVs aren't on stands at all, they're mounted on walls. If you're buying one of these, make sure that you have the proper mount required by the manufacturer. You also need to make sure it fits the frame of your house. If you aren't sure, check your manual, or ask a certified installer just to be safe.

Finally, never ever leave a remotes or toys on top of a television set because children may try to climb up to get them. By following these simple rules, experts say you could avoid a tragedy in your home.
