FORT MYERS, Fla. - Odds are, you have a drawer full of creams and solutions all claiming to do away with wrinkles and aging. A local plastic surgeon shares his advice, revealing three treatments that really do work.
"I had splotches from birth control pills and sun worshiping and not taking care of my skin," explains Donna Williams. She decided to do something about it. Donna entered a contest and won a complete makeover. Fort Myers plastic surgeon Michael Kim operated on her eyes and performed a face lift. But on her skin, Donna opted for a much simpler and affordable new treatment. Dr. Kim performed skin resurfacing, using a fractionated Co2 laser. It's one of three skin and wrinkle treatments Dr. Kim says actually work.
"You can cause thermal damage deep in the collagen and improve the wrinkles without burning the entire surface of the skin, therefore the down time as opposed to a month or two, is going to be days and weeks," explains Dr. Kim.
The procedure, which costs between $500 and several thousand dollars, only takes a few minutes, but results last a lifetime.
"There was no skin peeling, there was no pain," explains Williams. "It's just a wonderful process, my skin felt so fresh and so young and I felt so good."
Another treatment that works is Hyaluronic acid injections. It is a type of filler similar to collagen but lasts much longer.
Each injection costs $500 - $700 and is performed in a doctor's office.
"They are used to fill the little wrinkles that cause us to look older around the eyes, under the eyes, around the mouth and in the lips," explains Dr. Kim.
But if you're looking spend a little less time in the plastic surgeon's office and less money, there's a simple solution attained through prescription.
"I think the best bang for you buck is Retin A because it really does improve your skin," explains Dr. Kim. "It makes your skin look younger and better."
The prescription costs around $100 dollars.
Dr. Kim also warns consumers to watch out for drug store brands making big claims.
"Over the counter drugs generally speaking don't work that well because the strength and concentration is much less than prescription strength," explains Dr. Kim.
Williams says she's happy with her choice, "I would recommend it to anyone, it's a wonderful wonderful process."
