Celebrities rally for Obama in Fort Myers

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

FORT MYERS, Fla. - American Idol singer Vonzell Solomon as well as TV personality Judge Glenda Hatchett laced up their sneakers and pounded pavement in Fort Myers Sunday evening.

The twosome, as well as dozens of other supporters are trying to convince undecided voters to vote for Obama on Tuesday.

"The reason I'm doing this is, I'm so passionate about this campaign," said Judge Glenda Hatchett.

A campaign constantly criticized for its star power as pointed out earlier this year in a John McCain ad.

Though Obama has Hollywood connections, Hatchett says he's a man of the people someone everyone can believe in, which is why she's campaigning for him across the country.

"I've been to all the battleground states. Michigan, South Carolina and Missouri," said Judge Hatchett.

She's not the only celebrity. American Idol alum and Fort Myers native, Vonzell Solomon is also campaigning for Obama. She says electing Obama will be good for Southwest Florida.

"I know my family has been effected by the economy, jobs, and losing homes. I really wish we could get back on the straight and narrow course of restoring our government," Solomon said.

Both celebs say grassroot efforts like going door to door has helped the campaign.

"We've made contact with 13 million people," Judge Hatchett said.

Though not all the people may be voting for Obama, but as long as they get to the polls it's okay with Judge Hatchett.

"I want people involved in this democracy," she said.

Volunteers from John McCain's campaign are also hitting Florida making phone calls to voters across the state.

Senator McCain himself will be drumming up support here in the Sunshine state. Beginning at midnight he'll have a rally in Miami. Then Monday he'll have rallies in Jacksonville, Tampa, and Coral Gables.
