Kids at risk; bus stop dangers

By Nick Spinetto, WINK News

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - Parents living in the area where 19-year-old Turana Dickerson was hit by a truck say they're not surprised this happened. It's because there's no sidewalks along the road and cars often race by.

Marvin Peacock say it's been a problem on Bell Boulevard for years. "It's bad. It's scary," he said.

When it's dark out, Peacock say it's worse.

"They don't see us on the side of the road," said Bonnie Gonzalez, a mother of two children. Her complaints were evident 6 AM Wednesday morning when Turana Dickerson was hit by a truck while walking to her bus stop.

Wednesday afternoon her flip flops and debris litter the Lehigh Acres street.

Parents say this was inevitable.

"It's tragic. Sad. Very sad. Something was bound to happen," Gonzalez said.

With few street lights in the area, Gonzalez says people have been pushing for sidewalks for years.

"No body listens to us and look what happens," she said.

In an effort to help, officials reduced the speed limit in the area to 45 MPH, but WINK News clocked people going more than 50 MPH

Marvin Peacock says this is proof more needs to be done. "We need sidewalks and more light," he said.

Lee County Department of Transportation says there is plans to build sidewalks on Bell Boulevard but because of a lack of funding, it's not on the radar for at least 5 more years.

As kids get off the bus and walk along the side of the road, Gonzalez says anyone can see the problem is evident.

"I doubt this will be the only accident that happens. It's a shame."

In order to ensure your kid are safe at their bus stop, here are some safety tips from Lee County School District's website:

Students:
Leave home early enough to arrive at your bus stop on time.
Wear bright clothing and always walk facing traffic.
Wait for your bus in a safe place - well off the roadway.
Never stand, sit or play in or near the street.
Enter your bus in an orderly manner, and take your seat.
Follow the instructions of your bus driver.
Remain in your seat while the bus is in motion.
Keep your head and arms inside the bus at all times.
Keep aisles clear at all times.
Remain quiet and orderly.
Be courteous to your school bus driver and fellow passengers.
Be alert to traffic when leaving the bus.

Parents:
Parents/Guardians should always make sure they know the bus route number and bus stop location information for their child. In addition, they should always be able to describe what their child was wearing when they left for school in the morning. This information is vital for the school based and transportation staff in the search for a student whom has not arrived home from school.
Parents/guardians are responsible for getting students to and from designated bus stops safely, and for their conduct and safety while waiting for the bus.
