UPDATE: Teen hit by truck in Lehigh Acres

By WINK News

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. - 19-year-old Turana Dickerson is in critical condition after she was hit by a truck on her way to the bus stop. This happened Wednesday morning near the intersection of Bell and Manhattan in Lehigh Acres. Reportedly, the area has no sidewalks and very poor lighting.

Dickerson was taken to Lehigh Regional hospital, then she was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Turana Dickerson is a special needs student. Her family says she's in critical condition right now with a broken neck, a broken collar bone and a broken leg. They say she could be paralyzed from the neck down and that she may never talk again.

Turana was walking to the bus stop with her sister Jasmine around 6:15 a.m. Jasmine says they were not far from home when a truck swerved off the road and hit Turana.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, charges are still pending against the driver. They tell us that the driver said there was a car coming toward him with high beams on and that caused him to swerve off the road.

Dickerson's mother, Patricia Walker, says the Department of Transportation needs to do more to make that area safer for students walking to the bus stop.

This is the second child in this family hit by a car on the way to the bus stop. Patricia says she lost her 6-year-old boy in 2000 while he was walking to a bus stop.
